5 important facts about Ricotta cheese




1.     Ricotta is NOT a cheese

Ricotta is not a cheese as it is made from whey of sheep, cow, goat, or Italian water buffalo so it is considered more of a dairy product than a regular cheese.

2.     It is derived from Italian word, “Recocta”

The name ricotta is derived from an Italian word, that is, recocta, which refers to recooked. Ricotta cheese is smooth and have a creamy mild taste with a thick texture.

3.     It is particularly used in sweet and savory dishes

Ricotta cheese is especially used in sweet and savory recipes because of its light flavor and low salt content. You can also dry it in an oven to convert it into hard and sharp-tasting cheese that can be grated later. In addition, Ricotta cheese is commonly used in various Italian desserts and filled and baked pasta recipes such as Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni and other pasta recipes.

4.     It is stored well-wrapped in a refrigerator

It is recommended to store the ricotta cheese well wrapped in a refrigerator and use it within a week for best results once it is opened. However, the ricotta cheese that you may buy from a supermarket may last for several days longer in the refrigerator.  

5.     Ricotta is a lot healthier than other regular cheese

Ricotta has a good source of calcium and magnesium and it is ideal for those people who are on a strict diet but at the same time also want to relish on a cheese. Its low-fat content, which is around 10% is very low as compared to 34% in regular cheese.
